Moleskine Monday 14: The Force Awakens

January 18, 2016

Perhaps it's a little difficult to remember since so many have seen the film, but remember the excitement when the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit the internet? It was pretty electric and like many, it brought back a lot of those old memories of that long lost love. At the time I did a sketch of Han Solo where he says, "we're home" and here's the full two page spread showing some of the behind the scenes that went into creating that illustration. I think it's worth sharing again just for the strange little character doodles and their fun interactions.

Have a great week, everybody! To look at the rest of the Moleskine Monday posts, click here. If you liked this post, please consider sharing it using the social network of your choice. Thanks!

The BUNKER 16

January 13, 2016

Here's a little progress report on BUNKER 16. Closing in on the final pages of the issue, I thought I'd share this full page image. You don't know it yet but this is a critical moment in an issue full of surprises and…bloodshed.

Stay tooned for future updates when the fourth arc of The BUNKER resumes.

Moleskine Monday 13: The Man

January 11, 2016

Sometimes you just draw a creepy dude with something to hide. Certainly, allusions can be made to Grady (the older version) in The BUNKER but when I drew this I'm pretty sure I wasn't thinking of a particular character or person. For me the real treat in doing this drawing was capturing the little glint on his eye. It's the little things.

Super Tuesday! Batman Vs. Superman

January 5, 2016

Welcome to the very first Super Tuesday post! From now on Tuesday's on Joe Infurnari.com are the domain of the superheroic! To kick things off I did this Batman Vs. Superman sketch. I particularly like pitting these two against each other because it's not only an occasion for some amazing fireworks, it's also symbolic of the dance of two opposing worldviews. Batman has come to stand for the world as it is (warts and all) where Superman reflects what the world could be (Paradise). I think we all have to juggle these two impulses in various ways so I think that's why these two seem like they could forever grapple with no clear winner.

Moleskine Monday 11: Designing Women…Revolutionary Women!

December 28, 2015

As I've mentioned before, some of these pages are glimpses into the very earliest steps of putting together an illustrated story. When thinking about a female character and her revolutionary suit of wondrous perception, I had a few missteps and a lot of dead ends. Here's an example of some of the attempts along the way. I can't talk any more about the project but I can speak to the influences at play. I looked at ninjas, Dune still suits, some of Moebius' designs for Jodorowsky's Dune, those amazing sunlight blocking suits the vampires wore in Blade 2, and the iconic femme fatale from Fritz Lang's Metropolis…OF COURSE! I think I even threw in a little Tuskan Raider for fun.

The point is that these stories are built little by little both by writer and artist bringing into focus the ideas that are the impetus for these creative adventures. Thanks for being a passenger along with me on this journey. I promise many more horizons and wonderful vistas await.

Moleskine Monday 10: Head Games Double Header

December 21, 2015

This one comes out of playing with drawing faces in as many different ways as possible. These sketches are often done as a distraction from evening television (or is it the other way around?) and the easiest thing for me to mindlessly doodle are faces. In some case you'll see faces share features with others or barely hold together as faces at all. Have fun exploring! Click the image for a larger view to catch the details!

Moleskine Monday 9: Manic Memento Mori Double Header!

December 14, 2015

This week's installment of Moleskine Monday is a frenetic and acidic reminder of our own mortality.

Sometimes the subject matter for a drawing takes a back seat. In this case I wanted to play with my Copic markers to see if I could replicate an aesthetic similar to silkscreen and the skull was simply an occasion to do that. I'm not sure this was a complete success but it was fun to play around and I think there are some interesting moments here. Sometimes that's all you get.

As a fun side note, the bleeding inks on the Copic markers give me an opportunity to play with the sketch on the reverse side. In this case I added some red veins to bleed through the front and some opaque white to give it the googly eyes. You can see the reverse image on the right.

Come back next week for more Moleskine Monday action! You catch up on the other Moleksine Monday's here.
